Highlights

  • The Council has 175 Lifetime Members.
  • J. Lynn Smith was appointed to the position of
    Executive Director effective July 1, 2000.
  • Five new sewing machines were received from
    Home Sewing Machine Company for Council
    sewing projects. The first service project was
    making pillows and Christmas stockings for
    several United Way agencies.
  • Girl Scout Council of the Flint Hills earned
    recognition from Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. for
    "outstanding girl-to-population ratio serving
    Hispanic girls."
  • Daisy troop was started at Emporia Head Start.
  • 17 Day Camps were held.
  • 16 girls attended Resident Camp.
  • 121,824 boxes of cookies were sold, $34,582.80
    was earned by troops for activities; $18,264.50
    cookie dough earned by individual Girl Scouts
    to use for camp fees, council events, uniforms,
    equipment, membership fees, and troop dues.
  • The Council received a $1,000 grant from the LT
    Heritage Children’s Fund.
  • A Betty L. Wright Tribute Fund was established
    through the Flint Hills Girl Scout Council
    Foundation to be a permanent fund with
    interest to assist Girl Scouts in the future.

"Hot Springs Arkansas" was attended by Allyson
Montgomery, Caitlin Adams, Ashley
Prudence, Council Grove; Shanette
Schlotterbeck and Lisa Gritz, Eureka; Dorothy
Brunk, Madison. Adult sponsors were Debbie
Hayes, Eureka, and Cathy Prudence, Council
Grove.

"Appalachian Mountains Outward Bound" was
attended by Elizabeth Moore, Carbondale.

Highlights

  • Flint Hills Girl Scout Foundation received a
    donation of $10,500 to the Betty Wright
    Tribute Fund to establish a Marcella Mouser
    Scholarship.
  • The first Marcella Mouser Scholarship of $500
    was presented to Kendra Brooks, Emporia.
    The Jones Equipment Building was constructed
    on Double E campgrounds.
  • The Rachel Wilson Memorial was established to
    fund a gazebo at Double E.

Highlights

  • 118,896 boxes of cookies were sold.
  • Sarah Roemer, Emporia-Lowther, sold 701 boxes,
    making her Top Cookie Seller.
  • Marcella Mouser Scholarship for $500 was
    presented to Senior Girl Scout Kimberly Patton
    of Reading by Dr. Norma Karhoff.
  • 90th Birthday Event held in March at ESU which
    featured two events "Girl’s Voices" and "Mall
    Madness"
  • "Still Singing" with Melinda Caroll had 1,000
    girls and adults attending from seven states to
    celebrate Girl Scouting’s 90th birthday.
    Weekend events included a luau at the Amend
    Center, a dance workshop, and a recording
    studio workshop where a CD was made to
    commemorate the event. The weekend
    concluded with a performance by MelindaCarroll and the Flint Hills Girl Scout Choir.

"Katy Bike Trail—Missouri" was attended by

sponsors were Sara Sundberg and Lesley
Troxell, Emporia.
Dawn Hinson, Allen, and Sarah Richardson,
Emporia, were selected to present a report in
Washington, DC, on the G-Link on-line troop
program.

"Let’s Roll", a five-day and four-night leadership
conference, funded by the Bernard and Jane
Reeble Foundation, was attended by Hayley
Fry, Erica Kennedy, Sarah Richardson, Angela
Harris, Jenika Wheeler, Kathy Fuller, Emporia;
Ashley Sherretts, Reading; Kathleen Hornung,
Ashley Prudence, Council Grove; Nicole
Reynolds, Amanda Piper, Sarah Aspegren,
Carbondale; Sarah Samuelson, Burlington;
Erin England, Cottonwood Falls; Odessa West,
Clay Center; Dawn Hinson, Americus;
Angelynn Donnelly, Scranton; and Fatima
Hassan, Goessel.

2003

Highlights

  • Gold Award Scholarships were increased to $250.
  • Flint Hills Council established the first Virtual
    Troop in the United States. The Council
    received a $40,000 grant from GSUSA and the
    United States Department of Agriculture to
    bring Girl Scouting to girls through "G-Link"
    an on-line troop – especially designed for girls
    in rural areas, ages 11 through 17.
  • Girl Scout Council of the Flint Hills was awarded
    the Hispanic/Latina Membership Award by
    GSUSA. This award was given to the top ten
    councils nationwide with the highest
    membership of available Hispanic/Latina girls.
  • Erin Conley and Sheena Walters of Emporia
    received Marcella Mouser Scholarships for
    further education.
  • Lydia Roemer received the top cookie award for
    selling 1,000 boxes of cookies.
  • A ramp was installed at Double E Cabin to make
    the cabin wheelchair accessible.
  • Membership was 1,547 girls and 583 adults.
  • $3,500 bequest was received from the Reita
    Richel Estate.
  • $40,142 bequest was received from the Mary Hughes Estate.
  • Prudential contributed $2,000 in honor of past presidents Wanda Kinney and Barb Prost for their continuing volunteer service.
  • A decorative bridge was built at Double E for
    bridging ceremonies.
  • National membership dues raised from $7.00 to
    $10.00.
  • The Council received a NASDAQ $5,000 grant
    for a new program that teaches girls about
    personal finance and investing.

Highlights

  • The Council Board approved the Council Performance Assessment report for 1999 –2002. 
  • GSUSA gave Girl Scout Council of the Flint Hills excellent ratings.
  • Eileen Sieger chaired the Council Performance Assessment which is used by GSUSA for charter renewal.
  • The first Alison Cady Scholarship award recipient was Tracy Khounsavanh, Marion.
  • Marcella Mouser Scholarships were presented to Karen Marsh, Waverly, and Samantha Foley, Emporia.
  • Abby Maycock, a second grader at Emporia
    William Allen White School, was the top
    cookie seller with 1356 boxes.The previous
    Council record was 1301 boxes.
  • Girl Scout Council of the Flint Hills held a day long 50th Anniversary Celebration on August 28th. "Outdoor Jubilee" started at 9:00 a.m. at Camp Double E. "Trefoils and Tea at Two" was held in the afternoon at Amend Center.
  • To commemorate our golden anniversary, a quilt was created with designs representing the levels of Girl Scouting and the history of Girl Scout Council of the Flint Hills. It is on display at the Amend Girl Scout Center.
